Why Back Up Your PC?

In August of 2016, Delta Airlines had to cancel more than 1,300 flights, at a cost of $100 million, not because of weather or mechanical problems, but because the company's computer systems went down. If it can happen to a big corporation like Delta, don't think it can't happen to you. All technology, whether it's a brand new iMac, a spaceship, a hover board, a webmail service, or a ten-year-old PC running Windows Vista, can potentially take a sudden nosedive.

Hard drives are notorious for crashing, and ransomware can make a computer's contents inaccessible. Sometimes it's not even the fault of the technology: Fires, flooding, and other natural disasters can render PCs and other tech hardware inoperable. And laptops get stolen. You need insurance. With digital content becoming paramount for not only business assets—documents, plans, financial spreadsheets—but also for personal assets such as family photos, videos, and music, protecting with backup software is more important than ever.

Both Windows and Mac OS X have beefed up their built-in backup tools in recent years. Windows 10 includes a File History feature and a full disk backup feature, and OS X includes its Time Machine software. Both of these are well worth running, but they both have some limitations, lacking some of the extra benefits you get from running standalone backup software.

How Backup Software Works

The concept behind backup software is pretty simple: Make a copy of your files on storage separate from your main hard drive. That storage can be another drive, an external drive, a NAS, a rewritable disc, or an online storage and syncing service. Should you lose the files, either through disaster or simply by deleting them or overwriting them, you can just restore them from the saved copies.

But in order for this to work, the copies of your files must be updated regularly. Most backup software lets you schedule scans of your hard drive for new and changed files daily, weekly, or monthly, but my preferred option is to have the software continually (or at least, say, every 15 minutes) monitor your drive for changed or new files. Several products here offer this continuous backup option.

More granular options include whether backups are full, incremental, or differential. The first is pretty obvious—all the data you've selected for backup is copied in its entirety. Incremental backup saves system resources by only backing up changes in files from the last incremental backup, and differential backup saves all changes from the last full backup. With incremental, you need the latest full backup and all the intermediary backup data to restore a file to its original state, whereas with differential, you just need the last set of differential backup data and the first full one.

A couple of security options are usually available when setting up your backup: password protection and encryption. Using both of these is a good idea if the data you're backing up is at all sensitive. Another option offered by many backup applications is versioning. This lets you specify how many previous versions of your files you want to preserve, and for how long. I recommend maxing this out, especially when you're storing backups locally, with no annual fee for hosted online backup. In any case, the incremental changes don't eat up a ton of space.

A step further than the simple copying of files is copying the entire hard drive, including system files, as what's called a disk image. This contains every bit of data on the drive and offers stronger protection, since it enables you to recreate a system after a hard drive failure. Some products can even update a disk image nearly continuously. But that extra protection comes at the price of more complexity in setting up and restoring. Usually you'll need to run a pre-boot environment from startup media to restore a system image, since doing so from within your main OS isn't possible.

For another—highly recommended—approach to backup, consider online backup, also known as cloud backup. Services like Carbonite and Mozy securely send your data over the internet and save it on remote file servers in encrypted form. The big plus of this option is that the data is off your premises, and therefore not susceptible to local disasters. The downside is that they tie you to annual fees, and uploading and downloading backups is slower than loading local copies. Some online backup services, such as IDrive and SOS Online Backup, include software for making local backups, too.

Restoring From Backup

How you set up your backup affects how you can restore it. If you've backed up your entire disk image, you'll need to start the system from bootable media such as a DVD or USB stick that you create in the software. (You should definitely create one of these types of rescue media if your software offers it.) You also may need to attach another external drive containing the backup data along with the boot media. Several of the programs included here even let you restore data from one PC to another that has different hardware. This is useful when you simply want to migrate to new PC hardware, as opposed to recovering from a disaster.

For restoring individual files, several of the applications, such as Acronis True Image and Paragon Backup & Recovery, give you the option of choosing among previous versions of the files you've saved. Which file versions are available to restore depends on how frequently you've run backups. This is why the continuous backup option mentioned above is preferable. With that option, ideally, every time you save a file, it's backed up and you can get back to any previous point in time.

Welcome to my 1-99 P2P Melee guide for RuneScape 3 in the Evolution of Combat (EoC). This guide is regularly updated to incorporate recent updates to the game. There are a few routes to consider in achieved 99 in all 3 skills, including:

1. The fastest route
2. The most profitable route, and
3. The most AFKable route to 99

The combat skills are some of the easiest and most fun skills to get to 99. Getting max stats in Attack, Strength, and Defence will give 99 constitution as well since constitution gains EXP at a third of the rate as the others, so you are effectively killing four birds with three stones! See below for each of these methods.

Equipment

Equipment is the most important factor for quickly leveling-up in combat. The table below shows the best equipment for each level. Bear in mind that the best weapon for your level might not be the best weapon for a specific monster; always take into consideration the monster's weaknesses. Don't worry though, I will note the monsters' weaknesses throughout this guide so you don't have to look them up yourself.

Also note that a Full Void Knight Melee Set will increase melee accuracy by 10% and melee damage by 5%, therefore increasing the speed at which you can achieve 99. The set requires Level 42 in all combat stats and 22 in prayer. 42 summoning is not needed.

Fastest Route to 99

If you want to get 99 attack, strength, and defence as quickly as possible, this section is for you.

Levels 1-30: Troll Brutes

Levels 1-30 should take approximately one hour per skill and can be done on Troll Brutes. Here are their stats:

• Level 2
• 50 Hitpoints
• 40 EXP per kill (10 Constitution EXP included)
• Weak to air spells

Troll Brutes are found in the northernmost cave in Burthorpe. They regularly drop food which you can eat for sustenance. Although they are weak to air spells they only have 50 hitpoints so can be killed in one hit.

Level 30-60: Rock Crabs

Levels 30-60 will take about three hours per skill, maybe a bit longer, and can be reached by fighting Rock Crabs. Here are their stats:

• Level 102
• 2,550 Hitpoints
• 233 EXP per kill (58 Constitution EXP included)
• Weak to water spells

Rock Crabs are found just north of the Fremmenik Lodestone, along the coast. They have fairly profitable drops and also drop a fair number of gold charms, which are useful for summoning. They have the best Hitpoints-to-EXP ratio at this level and can be killed in under 15 seconds with the use of abilities.

Levels 60-70: Hellhounds

Levels 60-70 will take around two hours per skill and is all done on Hellhounds. Here are their stats:

• Level 132
• 3,300 Hitpoints
• 362 EXP per kill (119 Constitution EXP included)
• Weak to slash weapons

Hellhounds are found in the depths of the Taverley Dungeon and have a resource dungeon for better spots. They have no drops but are a very good source of gold charms, which are useful for summoning. They also drop a lot of spirit gems and are a source of hard clue scrolls. They are aggressive for ten minutes and with the use of Soulsplit or Guthan's Armour Set, they are quite AFKable, despite their good EXP rates.

Levels 70-90: Frost Dragons

Levels 70-90 should take around 15 hours per skill if using Frost Dragons. They require 85 Dungeoneering to reach but are well worth it. Here are their stats:

• Level 160
• 8,500 Hitpoints
• 1,085 EXP per kill (358 Constitution EXP included)
• Weak to stab weapons

Frost Dragons are found in the Asgardian Ice Dungeon Resource Dungeon and are incredible for EXP as well as profit. Their bones sell for around 16,000 each, meaning that each inventory can sell for around 450,000. The downside is that you'll require super-antifire potions for the best EXP per hour. However, normal antifire potions and protect-from-magic negate nearly all damage from Dragonfire. Using a Demon Horn Necklace and a Bone Crusher can sustain your player for as long as you need, provided you are using Soulsplit for healing. If you don't have Soulsplit, a Guthan's Armour Set is a reasonable replacement. If you don't have 85 Dungeoneering then you should continue training on Hellhounds. Hsowever, even considering the time taken to achieve 85 Dungeoneering, Frost Dragons are still faster to achieve level 90.

Levels 90-99: Fight Cauldron Minigame or Waterfiends

Levels 90-99 will take a few days. There are several good ways to achieve 99 but the fastest is to complete the Fight Cauldron Minigame. I'm not going to go into the entire lengthy strategy here, but it requires the Brink Of Extinction to be completed so may not be available for everybody. Aside from that, Waterfiends are probably the best EXP at this level if using Drygore weapons. If not, continue to kill Frost Dragons. Here are the Waterfiends' stats:

• Level 154
• 8,000 Hitpoints
• 934 EXP per kill (308 Constitution EXP included)
• Weak to bolts

Despite being weak to bolts, Waterfiends are easily killed with Drygore weapons and are the best droppers of crimson charms in the game.

Most Profitable Methods

For those who want to make money through combat, there are two ways to do so:

Method #1: Slayer

This method is quite simple. From level 1 in all combat stats and Slayer, training the Slayer skill from 1 to 99 will max out all of your combat stats as well as your Range and Mage stats if you choose to play to a monster's weakness. It will also give more than enough charms for 99 Summoning so is highly recommended for efficiency purposes. Getting 99 Slayer can pay off anywhere between 60m to 200m depending on luck, but it is fairly normal to assume a profit of over 100m.

Method #2: Frost Dragon Bones

This method is much quicker than the first and results in more money, around 500m to be precise. Unfortunately it requires 85 Dungeoneering and can be extremely repetitive, considering that you must kill around 30,000 Frost Dragons from 80 to 99 in all skills. The method and equipment for killing Frost Dragons is above.

AFK Method

The AFK (Away From Keyboard) Method is quite simple. The Bandit Camp in the east side of the Kharidian Desert is home to aggressive bandits. They are always aggressive if you wear a Saradomin or Zamorak arrow, unlike other monsters who lose their aggression after ten minutes. This means that if you can find a way of healing faster than the damage, you can stay there completely away from the game for hours provided you click every five minutes to stop it from logging you out.

The two ways of healing are as follows:

• Using a full Guthan's Set to heal you periodically.
• Using Soulsplit along with a Bonecrusher and Split Dragontooth necklace to restore prayer points (this is more high levelled, and 92 Prayer can be very expensive)

Since the Revolution Update, this method now gains around 10,000 EXP per hour more due to the use of abilities. The video below shows this method in more detail.
